ChristianiaCopenhagen, Denmark. July 22, 2007
Hudson has dedicated his blog to posting about Denmark today, so after realizing that Christiania was conspiculously absent from his round-up, I took it upon myself to continue the meme and pay my respects here:
Christiania, also known as Freetown Christiania is a partially self-governing neighbourhood of about 850 residents in the Danish capital Copenhagen. Christiania has established semi-legal status as an independent community, but has been a source of controversy since its creation in a squatted military area in 1971.
I’ve played a few shows in the community over the years, and it’s really like no other place in the world.

Thanks Norman, so true. christiana is a vibrant community and the non-conformist jewel of Copenhagen (or for conservatives, the thorn in its side). For the above entrance sign, I love how on the other side of it reads “You are now entering the EU.” Although only I visited in the Winter, I associate Christiana with Summer, perhaps for its colorful graffiti.
