So apparently something preceded the ’80s TV show of the same name. This Amazing Stories, launched in 1926, was the first magazine devoted solely to science fiction. Now i know where the TV show idea came from. Remember it? Stephen Spielberg created it as an anthology with each story by a different director like Clint Eastwood, Scorsese, or um Danny DeVito. But it got low viewership and only ran for two years. We had a tape (VHS, beta?) of the first season and my favorite story was this:
The Mission stars Kevin Costner as a bomber plane captain, Casey Siemaszko as the belly gunner, and Kiefer Sutherland as radio operator Static, trying to get their team down after a bomber run. The belly gunner is stuck in the turret of the plane with malfunctioning landing gear. With cartoonist aspirations, the trapped gunner ultimately resolves the story using mind over matter.
