this is the retina of my right eye. i had my eyes dilated today and the optometrist gave me a digital of each retina (after i asked nicely). You can see the macula, which appears as a dark spot, and the optic nerve to the right. What a healthy eye! and what gorgeous retinal blood vessels i have.
Mrs optometrist told me:
-the “backgroud” color of the retina is determined by the pigment of one’s skin. she showed me examples of other retinas, which vary widely.
-many retinas have a pattern like a tiger print (see bottom left hand of mine).
-about 10% of us have so-called retinal birthmarks, which should be monitored over time for changes. i have one that was not captured in the picture, according to doc.
